2025 OSCAR CONTENDER – Through the Lens: A Cinematographer’s Reflection on WILL I SEE YOU AGAIN?

As a writer and retired DP, I often find myself wrestling with the duality of capturing moments and telling stories. Will I See You Again? is a poignant exploration of love and loss that speaks to both the heart and the lens. Watching the story unfold, I was struck by how each frame encapsulated raw emotion, intertwining the lives of its characters in a deeply personal narrative.

From the very first shot, the film immerses you in a world tinged with nostalgia. The use of soft, diffused lighting sets the tone, evoking memories that linger just out of reach. Each close-up was an invitation into the characters’ souls, allowing the audience to feel their pain and hope.

What truly captivated me was the director’s attention to detail. He employed wide angles to capture the isolation of the main character amidst the crowd, emphasizing their emotional solitude. It was a reminder that sometimes, even in the busiest places, we can feel utterly alone. Nick Wechsler and Hosea Chanchez give two very standout performances that draws the audiences into the film. Through their revelations we discover their past and we empathize with the history they shared.

The cinematography danced between vibrant colors and muted tones, mirroring the characters’ journeys. During moments of joy, the camera moved fluidly, almost as if it was dancing with them. In contrast, during the darker moments, he employed tighter frames and shadowy corners, reflecting the characters’ struggles. It was a balance of light and darkness, hope and despair—elements that made this story resonate deeply.

Will I See You Again? is more than just a film; it’s an experience crafted through every frame and moment captured. This short film reminds us of the fragility of life and the enduring power of love. The story urges us to reflect on our own connections and the moments we cherish. In the end, it’s about the stories we capture—and the ones we hold close to our hearts.
