The charming and bittersweet Life Goes On takes the familiar time-loop premise and reshapes it into a poignant meditation on ageing, regret, and the people we leave behind after death. Set within a hospice, the story follows Bill (David Bradley), an elderly resident trapped in an endless cycle of repetition. Each day begins with a nurse waking him from sleep and ends with his death, only for the same routine to start all over again.
Like Groundhog Day before it, Life Goes On is far from bleak, but rather frequently very funny. This is helped by a wonderfully nuanced performance from David Bradley, who brings warmth, wit, and vulnerability to Bill’s cantankerous persona This supported by a strong ensemble cast, including recognizable names such as Matt Berry, Jayne Aguirre, and Laura Checkley.
Yet the comedy never undermines the film’s emotional core. Audritt and Butterfield balance humour with genuine pathos, confronting the realities of death with compassion, honesty, and surprising tenderness. As Bill begins to realize his time looping dilemma, it offers him an opportunity for reflection and a renewed appreciation of life. The film’s repeating structure could easily become monotonous, but new emotional layers are revealed as the story moves forward culminating into a very profound finale.
Audritt and Butterfield have crafted a comedy drama rich in empathy, humour and tenderness. Thoughtful without becoming sentimental and moving without ever feeling manipulative, the film leaves a lasting impression. A touching reminder that even stories centred on death can ultimately become celebrations of life, love, and the love that endures long after we’re gone.
